Addressing assessment needs from the elementary school level into the world of work.WestEd, designated by the U.S. Department of Education as the Assessment Specialty Regional Educational Laboratory, seeks ways to combine traditional and innovative assessment methods into coherent, affordable, and valid systems that provide the feedback desired for all levels of accountability. The Assessment and Standards Development Services (ASDS) program is involved extensively at the local, state, and national level in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating standards and assessment tools, methods, and systems. ASDS addresses the assessment needs from the elementary school into the world of work, within such traditional academic areas as language arts, mathematics, science, and social science, as well as emerging fields such as school-to-work transition and teacher preparation and credentialing. While some of our work focuses on revealing how well individual students or workers are learning or performing, other work is directed at broader concerns of accountability and program or school success. Whether in support of local, state, or national reform movement, we concentrate on developing ways to use assessment so that all students have an opportunity to learn and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary for success in school and beyond.
