about the program

WestEd's Health & Human Development Program (HHDP) works with schools, families, and communities to promote positive youth development, academic achievement, health, and well-being. The HHDP team conducts surveys and needs assessments; evaluates program effectiveness; develops demonstration projects; conducts technical assistance and training; and prepares and disseminates research summaries and prevention guidelines.

HHDP is a leading source of information about student risk behaviors and resiliency factors that offset such risks. Its California Healthy Kids Survey has led to better understanding of the relationship between students’ health behaviors and academic performance. HHDP also implements effective approaches to preventing problem behaviors among youth. It is currently evaluating the first state legislation designed to help counter the rise in adolescent obesity, improve the nutritional content of school meals, and encourage daily physical activity.

  • Health & Human Development Program directs a number of projects relevant to schools and communities nationwide.
